About the Nigerian Army (NA)

The Nigerian Army (NA) is the largest branch of the Nigerian Armed Forces and is responsible for land-based military operations.

It all started from 1863, when Lieutenant John Hawley Glover of the Royal Navy organized a local force known as the “Glover Hausas” which then became known as the West African Frontier Force (WAFF) before being renamed as the Royal Nigerian Army at independence in 1960 and was finally called the Nigerian Army when Nigeria became a republic in 1963.

Today, the Nigerian Army is organized into several combat divisions across the country (such as the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 8th, 81st, and 82nd Divisions).

They’re responsible for securing the borders from external aggression and terrorist attacks, restoring order and suppressing internal unrest when called upon by the President, as well as carrying out peacekeeping operations under the UN and ECOWAS.
